02. Shanghai Maibao Embarks on Carbon Management Journey, Driving Green Transformation in the Snack Supply Chain

According to Mondelēz International’s 2024 State of Snacking Report, snack consumption is increasingly diversified. Consumer demand for health, convenience, enjoyment, and social experience is pushing brands to innovate. Notably, Gen Z and millennials are more willing to pay premium prices for snacks that meet sustainability standards, accelerating the industry's shift toward eco-friendly practices such as green production and fair trade.

Leading snack brands like Mondelēz and Ovaltine are now requiring their suppliers to decarbonize and adopt greener practices. From 2022 to 2023, Mondelēz reported a total emissions reduction of approximately 1.34 million metric tons CO₂e (from 32.32 million to 30.98 million metric tons), representing a 4.1% decrease. Scope 3 emissions fell by about 2.2%, marking notable progress in value chain decarbonization.

In its 2022 State of Snacking Report (its 2022 sustainability report), Mondelēz emphasized sustainable sourcing of key ingredients, reducing environmental impacts, and designing recyclable packaging.

Ovaltine: Parent Company ABF Targets Net-Zero Emissions Across the Entire Value Chain by 2050

Ovaltine, a historic brand originating in Switzerland in 1904, is now part of Associated British Foods (ABF), a multinational food group. The drink is especially popular in the UK, Italy, and Switzerland.

ABF has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

To support this goal, ABF requires suppliers to adhere to its environmental policies, including reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and utilizing renewable energy. Suppliers must also contribute to ABF’s Scope 3 emissions reduction targets by providing relevant carbon data.

The carbon neutrality ambitions of snack industry giants like Mondelēz and ABF cannot be realized without emissions reductions from upstream suppliers.
